The Business On Board Experience
Business On Board Impact:
Vincent R. McGuinness, Jr., Partner, Cozen O’Connor and Elfreth’s Alley Association
Over the course of the past 300 years, Elfreth’s Alley—our nation’s oldest residential street—has survived wars, economic recessions and depressions, fevers, fires, political and social change, and constant development pressures. Thanks in large measure to Vince McGuinness, the Alley has a solid foundation to move into the next three centuries.
After observing Elfreth’s Alley as part of his Business On Board training, Vince joined the board as a full member in 1999—a year marked by financial, staff, board and property development crises. Undaunted by the numerous challenges before him, he assumed the presidency the following year, taking swift and decisive steps to make the organization financially and professionally sound. A new executive director was hired. The first board retreat in nearly 10 years was held. Board membership was strengthened to include 2 CPAs, and a streamlined committee structure was put in place. Other measures included tightened financial controls, investment management, strategic vision and planning, as well as responsible and cooperative urban development.
To successfully accomplish change of such magnitude requires a delicate balance, which Vince achieved by offsetting his vision for the Alley with his respect for other board members and the staff.
Vince’s tenure as president provided stability during challenging times and made a positive difference. His leadership by example—including doubling his personal as well as his company’s financial commitments—encouraged other board members to follow suit.
With the perfect blend of luck, caring individuals and strong leaders like Vince McGuinness, Elfreth’s Alley stands as a vibrant and dynamic example of not only Philadelphia’s—but America’s—enduring strength.
