Business On Call

Business On Call matches arts and cultural organizations with business people who donate their times for hands-on, short-term volunteer activities.

Business participants have fun and experience a wide variety of our cultural community from a new perspective. Arts organizations grow their audience and expand their staff capacity by having volunteers greet visitors, manage registration, usher, and more. View our Business On Call brochure on Issuu.

Celebrating our own

We are honoring our own “people in action” by highlighting the work of some exceptional volunteers who tirelessly dedicate themselves to the arts and make a positive difference in their communities.

Andrea Hyslop is no stranger to service in the arts community. Of her involvement with the Business On Call program, Andrea notes,

“It gives me a lot of satisfaction. The arts are such an important part of any vibrant community and I love being part of it.”

Andrea's enthusiasm about volunteering has made a strong impression on the people that she's worked with over the years, including arts managers at Eastern State Penitentiary , Arden Theatre Company , Tyler Arboretum , and Historic Yellow Springs.

Says Suzanne Halstead, Director of Education and Public Programs at Historic Yellow Springs, “When Andrea comes, I know it will be a good day. Her willing, cheerful attitude builds morale for our staff. They immediately relax, knowing the task is in good hands.”

John Heard is a tried-and true Business On Call volunteer, having worked consistently with several arts organization that he supports, like Tempesta di Mare, Singing City , and the Arden Theatre Company. John is often spotted at arts events volunteering with his wife and daughter and sees volunteering as a great opportunity for a family outing.

As a seasoned volunteer, John had some words of advice for new Business On Call participants:

“Take a risk, go out, and put your name on the email list!”

Ann Alfano understands the dual nature of volunteering: you make a positive impact on the organization you choose to help, but you also get something back.

Ann enjoys Business On Call not only because she is able to help out an arts group that could use an extra hand, but also because she feels truly valued as a volunteer by the arts organizations she's worked with and has the had the opportunity to volunteer with family members and co-workers.

Ann has been struck by how much Business On Call has benefitted her in ways she didn't expect. As she told us,

“I get to interact with new people like volunteers, arts staff, and other American Water employees, to network, and to develop speaking skills…I've done things now because of Business On Call that I never would have normally done on my own.”

For example, Ann didn't come into Philadelphia much before joining Business On Call, but the program moved her out of her comfort zone. She now regularly takes the train into the city to volunteer.

Besides discussing the many benefits of volunteering, Ann left us with a very important point about Business On Call for new volunteers: “This program is fun!”
